Hjarbæk fjord

Virksund called the narrows, which is the gate to Hjarbaek Inlet. Sound gave the name to the settlement, located in North Fjends out to the narrow strait. Today crossing a causeway Sound and cuts Hjarbæk Fjord fjord. The dam was ready to accept the cars in 1966, and thus discontinued ferry, which had existed since the Middle Ages.

When the old sources can read about the ferry service, then the cause is usually trouble crossing. The ferry was old and worn out, or landing conditions were bad. There was no port, but on both sides of the strait, in Sundstrup and Virksund, had been constructed a bridge into the water of large stones, filled with dirt and fortified it with turf and heather peat. In the early 1800s kept ferryman a man, and a girl, although there should be two fellows to calm ferry. In difficult weather conditions was a fisherman called, but could not get hold of anyone, was not sailed.

Ferryman lived at that time in Sundstrup, and from the other hand it could be difficult to shout him up in windy weather. It did, however, improve the system of raising a rod, which used to hang a lamp into. It could ferryman of course not see, when he slept, so therefore there was a gun disposed in a shed, so one could warning him with a skud.

After 1838 was the ferry service in the same family, and in 1844 you got a license to operate inn. Since railways came, slowed traffic Virksund very. Many preferred to travel south on Hjarbæk Fjord, as ferry traffic was almost only local significance. I 1929 was the old ferry barge taken out of service and replaced by an ordinary rowing boat. The ferry continued as rowboat until closing and was thus the last rowboat in fjord.
